Prevention Tips: Child Sexual Abuse

1. BE AWARE of the words your child chooses to utter and behaviour they display. Fully participate in your child’s regular activities.
2. Talk to your child. Show the child who can touch and who cannot touch them. Educate them about what kind of behavior and touching is appropriate. Teach them the safe touch and boundary. Talk to your child and be open about the unspoken silent words. Listen unconditionally. Be congruent. Let the child know that they can talk to you openly.
3.  Be approachable! Be open! Do not underestimate your child’s age. Even as young as 3-6 year olds can express themselves either with their words or behaviours. Pay attention to their drawing, often times they express through art.
4. No Secrets! Let them know that there is no such thing as ‘secret’. Let them know if anyone (close family members, uncles, brothers, grandfather etc) says something is ‘secret’, they should approach you first.
5. Trust your child! Be extra cautious and aware of your child’s behavior. Do not be judgmental when they approach you. Praise and encourage their honesty. Children never lie about sexual abuse. They never make up stories about sexual abuse.
6.  If your child is affected by sexual abuse please seek advice from your local organisations and police. Seek assistance. There are professionals to help you, and you are not alone in this!
